UFI 100 Exhibition - Chapter One

The first chapter of the Centennial Exhibition spans 1925 to 1999, highlighting the foundation and evolution of the industry in the 20th century. Through photographs, artefacts, and stories, it reflects on our shared history and the path ahead.

1925-1937

First years of development

UFI, originally the Union des Foires Internationales (Union of International Fairs), was founded on 15 April 1925 in Milan by 20 leading European trade fairs from cities including Bordeaux, Brussels, Cologne, Milan, Paris and Vienna. Their aim was to foster cooperation and revive international trade after World War I.

Established as a non-political international association under French law, UFI served as a platform for rebuilding economic ties across borders. By 1937, its membership had grown to 33 organisations, reflecting its expanding role in promoting peace and economic recovery through trade.

1947 - 1956

International challenges

After a 10-year pause during World War II, UFI resumed activities in 1947 and moved its headquarters from Milan to Paris. The 24 remaining members renewed their commitment to economic recovery, as non-European companies began joining during this new era of global trade.

1957 - 1975

Extensive economic changes

As mass production and new trade sectors grew, specialised exhibitions were invited to join UFI. To maintain a clear structure, membership was limited to organisers rather than individual events, though exhibitions could still earn UFI recognition by meeting set criteria.

As a non-political international association, UFI served as a vital forum for dialogue between organisers from both Eastern and Western blocs. By 1975, it represented 99 member organisations across 40 countries, overseeing 119 specialised exhibitions and 55 general trade fairs.

1976 - 1991

Integration and maturity in a global economy

Amid growing trade globalisation, UFI took on the challenge of integrating developing and industrialising countries into the trade fair economy. Its efforts focused on advisory services, training, and fostering cooperation between members and emerging markets.

1992 - 1999

Focus on marketing

With East–West trade barriers easing and digital communication advancing, the trade fair industry faced new challenges. UFI responded by expanding member services through seminars, technical committees, and regional meetings, while also welcoming new member categories, including associations, venue owners, and research organisations.

The UFI 100 Exhibition will continue at the 92nd UFI Global Congress in Hong Kong SAR (19–22 November 2025), with a special focus on the post-2000 period, showcasing the industry’s evolution in the 21st century. New stories, milestones, and moments will be added to this living celebration of our shared legacy.
